ENGL 126 - Languages of the World

This course examines major world language families and representative languages through analysis of phonology, morphology, syntax, and pragmatics. Students explore languages prominent in Southern California communities—including Spanish, Vietnamese, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, African American English, and others—to understand cross-linguistic influences and sociolinguistic factors that affect multilingual communication. The course prepares future educators and professionals to recognize how diverse linguistic backgrounds shape communication patterns and to assess language use in culturally diverse contexts. Valuable for teaching credential candidates and students in foreign languages, anthropology, communications, health sciences, and English.
