This course is designed for recently employed firefighters and other interested students. Topics covered include organization of the public and private fire service, characteristics and behavior of fire, fire hazards and firefighter safety, extinguishing agents and related extinguishing equipment, fire protection systems and water supply, incident command system, confined-space rescue awareness, building construction and assemblies, basic fire fighting tactics and strategy, fire prevention, hazardous materials, emergency care, wildland firefighting, rapid intervention, technical rescue, and physical fitness. This course meets the State Board of Fire Services (SBFS), State Fire Training (SFT), and the Office of the California State Marshal (OSFM) requirements for designation as a “California Firefighter I Accredited Academy” (Accredited Regional Training Program (ARTP) by OSFM). Students who complete this course may receive OSFM certifications in Firefighter 1A (Structural Firefighting), Firefighter 1B (Hazardous Materials First Responder Awareness and Operational), Firefighter 1C (Wildland Firefighting), Passenger Vehicle Extrication, Confined Space Awareness, Live Fire tactics Rapid Intervention Crew Tactics, and Firefighter Survival and Incident Command. Students will also receive training for Firefighter 2, and be eligible for Firefighter 2 certifications after completion. Students who pass all OSFM testing will receive or be eligible for IFSAC and Pro Board Firefighter 1 and Firefighter 2 corticates from OSFM. This course requires completion of a medical physical examination and includes arduous physical activity.
