This course prepares students for successful peer tutoring at the community college level. Instruction focuses on theoretical foundations for tutoring, guiding principles, communication skills, techniques and strategies for working with diverse populations, and an overview of college resources. This course is intended to prepare tutors for employment in the Learning Assistance Center; Math, Science, and Engineering Center; or other peer tutoring programs at Rio Hondo College.
Prerequisite:NTTR 010
This course trains returning and experienced tutors on more advanced concepts surrounding student tutoring. Topics covered include group process, equity mindset, brain dominance theory, asking probing questions, tutoring target populations, and advanced group management skills.
This course focuses on basic-intermediate verbal communication within routine situations common in everyday life to promote confidence in English-speaking settings. Emphasis is on communication/conversations within school, work, and community domains. This course is for students aiming to enhance spoken English proficiency.
This course stresses the refinement and expansion of language skills which enable students to use fluid-paced English to effectively meet social, academic, and workplace demands. Reading for comprehension focuses on factual extraction as well as interpretation using critical thinking skills. Progression of writing skills focuses on the introduction of the writing process and the construct well-developed compositions. If taken in sequence with NESL 017, successful completion of this course earns a Certificate of Competency in Advanced English as a Second Language and prepares students for direct entry to Rio Hondo College’s Credit English Program.
This course provides older adults with instruction to promote agility and cardiovascular fitness. Guided movement sequences are specifically geared towards older adults. The course includes stretches to enhance the range of movement that may benefit everyday life and activities, as well as light conditioning to promote physical stability and core strength.
This interdisciplinary course is designed primarily for secondary credit recovery students to identify, interpret, and confront social and historical constructs of identity, race, class, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality in order to dissect their existence and position in the world. To empower students to engage socially and politically and to think critically about the world around them, Ethnic Studies documents the experiences of people of color in order for students to construct counter-narratives and develop a more complex understanding of the human experience. Students develop a respect for cultural diversity and see the advantages of inclusion.

This course serves as preparation for calculus. Algebra topics include exponents, radicals, equations, inequalities, and functions, which consist of quadratic, polynomial, rational, exponential, and logarithmic. Trigonometry topics include definitions, graphs, inverse functions, identities, and solving equations.

Advisory:It is advised that students be able to engage in written composition at a college level and read college-level texts.
This support course is designed to develop the mathematical knowledge and study skills necessary for successful completion of Algebra and Trigonometry for Calculus (MATH 185). Students must be concurrently enrolled in a section of MATH 185 to take this support course. Topics from arithmetic, geometry, and algebra are covered. This is a non-degree applicable course offered on a pass-no pass basis.
